You should take the following steps prior to building a retaining wall to avoid future problems:

1. consult with an engineer, an architect, or a building designer to prepare a plan showing the location of the retaining wall on your property
2. consider at least 600 millimetre clearance between the property boundary line and the closest part of the retaining wall
3. ensure that the wall is not within 2 metres of Council underground services (sewer main, stormwater pipe or water supply main pipe)
4. engage a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) to select, design and certify the most suitable type of retaining wall for the site
5. advise the RPEQ if you are planning a another structure that may impose a surcharge loading on the wall (For example: driveway or building loads adjacent to wall)
6. obtain a copy of the engineer-designed section for the wall signed and certified by the RPEQ
7. obtain a building approval if a surcharge loading is imposed on the wall or the height of the wall is 1 metre or greater, or the wall is located within 1.5 metres of a building or another retaining wall
8. a building approval can be obtained from Council or from a suitably qualified private certifier prior to construction of the wall
9. engage a Registered Builder to build the wall under the supervision of the RPEQ
10. obtain inspection certificates from the RPEQ for the construction of the wall at different stages (excavation, reinforcement, subsoil drainage and final)
11. obtain a final certificate from the private certifier

Note: Items 7, 8 and 11 are not necessary where the retaining wall is self-assessable.

Timber retaining walls have two significant advantages. The first is that they are generally cheaper, although this advantage has been eroded as timber has become more expensive in recent times, while the price of synthetic materials has reduced.

The second advantage is that timber retaining walls are generally more pleasing to the eye, and certainly make for a better look when flowers and shrubs are planted in amongst your timber retaining wall.

One consideration is how big your retaining wall is going to be, and how much pressure is going to build up behind it. A large retaining wall that has to withstand a lot of pressure will need an engineer’s report and a council permit. A small retaining wall, say a foot high and only 6 foot wide, is something that the owner may be able to build comfortably themselves over a weekend; for this a timber retaining wall may be suitable and will be easier to work with than most other forms of retaining wall.

The nature of a retaining wall means that pressure is greatest at the base, and less at the top, making a timber retaining wall particularly suitable for low walls. Generally the timber, the amount of timber below the ground should be equivalent to the amount of timber above the ground.

Treated timber should always be used to prolong the life of your timber retaining wall, and you may need to protect the base of the timber against rotting. In this regard the amount of water likely to build up behind your retaining wall is a factor to consider, as these the steps you take to drain water away from a timber retaining wall. You should always include filter gravel and excess filter cloth in the construction of the wall. Untreated timber is also likely to attract termites, which could lead to a problem much bigger than your timber retaining wall.

An often overlooked cost is the cost of removing a timber retaining wall, so extending the life of your timber as much as possible is a great idea.

Finally, for a timber retaining wall on the Gold Coast, location may be a factor. If you live on the coast the salt air is a factor that is far different to that faced by those living inland.

And of course, the alternative to a back-breaking weekend is to look for a retaining wall builder on the gold coast
